Greece 2005
OCSC's Greece Give Back - 2005
Our Flotilla to Greece in September 2005 donated $2200 (i.e. 5% of the cost of each participating charter) to Archelon, a non-profit group in Athens that works to protect loggerhead turtles and their habitats in Greece. The funds have been directed towards a satellite transmitter, which will be used in their monitoring and research efforts.
We got the chance to visit Archelon's site (and make friends with the turtles - see Maggie to the left!). It was great to meet some of the staff - especially Theoni and Aliki - who we have been communicating with for months from Berkeley.
Established in 1983, Archelon now monitors over 75 km of major nesting areas in Greece and tracks the movements of 4,000 turtles. They also closely involve state agencies, local authorities and inhabitats in their management plans. We're excited to support their work!
